{"id":1124,"date":"2009-02-06T17:54:36","date_gmt":"2009-02-06T23:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelsiegel.net\/?p=1124"},"modified":"2009-02-06T20:08:24","modified_gmt":"2009-02-07T02:08:24","slug":"stimulus-linkorama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelsiegel.net\/?p=1124","title":{"rendered":"Stimulus Linkorama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some great commentary on the stimulus package today:<\/p>\n<li>Alternative proposals from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/POLITICS\/02\/05\/miron.libertarian.stimulus\/index.html\">Miron<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gregmankiw.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/my-preferred-fiscal-stimulus.html\">Mankiw<\/a> sound better to me than a raft of spending.<\/li>\n<li>Those millions of jobs we&#8217;re supposed to get?  They&#8217;re estimated from a simple <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/public\/content\/article.aspx?RsrcID=43015\">rule of thumb<\/a>.  We all know how good rules of thumb work, right?<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m curious if anyone has an example of a stimulus package working.  Massive spending cuts after World War II <a href=\"http:\/\/hnn.us\/blogs\/entries\/61214.html\">failed<\/a> to create a recession.  And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/06\/world\/asia\/06japan.html?_r=3&#038;hp\">Japan&#8217;s<\/a> stimulus didn&#8217;t seem to help.<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>In the end, say economists, it was not public works but an expensive cleanup of the debt-ridden banking system, combined with growing exports to China and the United States, that brought a close to Japan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Lost Decade. This has led many to conclude that spending did little more than sink Japan deeply into debt, leaving an enormous tax burden for future generations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>Popular Mechanics points out that the reason projects are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/technology\/industry\/4302578.html\">shovel-ready<\/a> is because they weren&#8217;t worth doing in the first place.<\/li>\n<p>I&#8217;m opposed to the current stimulus, but my conservative streak has lots of misgivings.  I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;m right and the stakes seem awfully big.  The downside risk of not acting &#8212; a prolonged recession &#8212; seems better the downside risk of acting &#8212; inflation and a lost decade.  But that&#8217;s just me.<\/p>\n<p>I also refuse, on principle, to join with the science blogs in protesting the elimination of NSF budget hikes.
