I find myself fascinated by these handful of survivors who probably could never have imagined they&#8217;d live so long.<\/p>\n<p>Read the whole thing.  It&#8217;s a great article.  Particularly this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>His most vivid memory of the war was of encountering a comrade whose torso had been ripped open by shrapnel. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Shoot me,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Mr. Patch recalled the soldier pleading.<\/p>\n<p>The man died before Patch could draw his revolver.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I was with him for the last 60 seconds of his life. He gasped one word \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcMother.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 That one word has run through my brain for 88 years.
