{"id":251,"date":"2007-05-27T21:15:52","date_gmt":"2007-05-28T03:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelsiegel.net\/?p=251"},"modified":"2007-05-27T21:37:56","modified_gmt":"2007-05-28T03:37:56","slug":"two-more-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelsiegel.net\/?p=251","title":{"rendered":"Two More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just watched two more of 2006&#8217;s best films.  <em>The Queen<\/em> actually isn&#8217;t great, but Hellen Mirren&#8217;s performance was easily the best of the year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pan&#8217;s Labyrinth<\/em> has to be in the mix with <em>Children of Men<\/em> and <em>United 93<\/em> as my best picture of 2006.  Simply beautiful.  I can now see how <em>Children of Men<\/em> lost the Best Cinematography oscar (although it still should&#8217;ve taken Best Editing).  I&#8217;m annoyed that Ivana Baquero did not get a Best Actress nomination. I haven&#8217;t seen the other films (apart from bits of <em>The Devil Wears Prada<\/em>, but it&#8217;s hard to imagine all four of the other performances were better than the mesmerizing turn the 11 year-old spaniard put in.<\/p>\n<p>I noted last year that the critics&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/criticstop10.net\/2005\/index.htm\">favored <\/a>movies of 2005 was loaded with downer movies. The best you could say about some of them was that they were &#8220;hopeful&#8221;. And before you say &#8220;critics always like downer movies&#8221;, that&#8217;s not always the case.  It wasn&#8217;t in <a href=\"http:\/\/criticstop10.net\/2004\/index.htm\">2004<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/criticstop10.net\/2003\/index.htm\">2003<\/a> or most years.<\/p>\n<p>2006 looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.listsofbests.com\/list\/22872\">more of the same<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just watched two more of 2006&#8217;s best films.
